Vendetta Is Live — The Story Behind the Book

Vendetta is live. The first Kailani Priest novel has been a long time coming — years of outlining, drafting, scrapping chapters, rebuilding, and finally publishing. This post is the honest story behind the book: where it came from, what it cost to build it right, and where the series goes from here.

Action thriller is a crowded genre. Every bookstore shelf and Amazon category is stacked with military operators, ex-CIA agents, and rogue government operatives. To stand out, I needed a character who felt different — someone with a specific cultural identity, a specific set of skills, and a moral framework that wasn't a copy of every other thriller protagonist.

Where the Idea for Kailani Priest Started

Kailani Priest was built around a specific question: what does it look like when someone with genuine military training and a Hawaiian identity navigates a world that keeps trying to fit him into a category he doesn't belong in? Hawaiian culture has a deep sense of obligation to family and community — and that tension, between personal obligation and the kind of violence his skills make possible, is what drives the entire series. Most thriller protagonists are defined by what they can do. Kailani is defined by why he won't.

The Vendetta storyline came from thinking about what kind of threat would push a character like that past his limits. Not a global conspiracy. Not a rogue agency. Something personal. A threat close enough to home that the professional calculus breaks down and the only thing left is resolution. That is the engine of the first book — and it sets up everything that follows in the series.

Building a Character Who Actually Feels Real

The research took longer than the drafting. Getting Hawaiian identity right — the language, the cultural protocol, the geography, the way a person raised on those islands carries themselves — required more than surface-level detail. Shallow cultural representation in fiction is easy to spot and it destroys reader trust immediately. The Hawaiian identity in this series is not decoration. It is load-bearing. Every significant character decision Kailani makes flows from who he is and where he comes from.

The pacing in Vendetta is tighter than most thrillers I've read. Short chapters. High-stakes transitions. The action sequences are written to move at the speed they would actually happen — not slowed down for dramatic effect, but rendered with the clarity that lets a reader track every move. That discipline came from reading hundreds of fight choreography failures in the genre and deciding to do it differently.

What's Next for the Kailani Priest Series

The second book is already in development. Vendetta establishes the character, the stakes, and the world. Book two expands the threat radius and forces Kailani into situations where his code — the thing that makes him different from the people he goes up against — gets tested harder. Every series entry will be self-contained with a resolved main story, but the overarching arc builds across books. Readers who finish Vendetta will recognize the setup for what comes next.

If you've read Vendetta, the best thing you can do is leave a review on Amazon and Goodreads. Reviews are the currency of discoverability in this market. Honest feedback from real readers matters more than any ad campaign. The series continues only if the first book finds its audience — and right now, that depends on word of mouth.
